Durant experienced the Take to the Skies Airfest for the first time last weekend when the show visited Durant Regional Airport.
The show lasted all day Saturday ending with a hot air balloon glow. The show featured pilots performing difficult maneuvers in multiple aircrafts as well as powered paragliders and hot air balloons.
Debby Standefer said she decided to bring her show to Durant after her partner Chip Lamb suggested that the Durant Regional Airport would be a good spot for the show.
“I had come through here and seen your airport after it had been renovated and told Debby, I said ‘Debby we need to go to Durant and see if they would be willing to host an air show because they have a wonderful airport,’” said Lamb.
The Durant show was the first in the Oklahoma and Texas region this year. Standefer said some of the goals of the show were to help promote cities they visit and help get children interested in aviation as a career.
She said that in the weeks before the show, her group worked to promote the show and the city to bring in tourism to the area.
Lamb said that they would all love to come back to Durant every year but it is up to Durant if they get to come back. Judging by the crowd Saturday, Chip said he feels they will be coming back to Durant next year.
