Many Durant children walked to school Wednesday instead of riding the bus for National Walk to School Day.
This was the fifth year the Durant School District has participated in the event. The schools have hosted “Walk and Roll to School Day” since 2007.
For students who could not walk all the way from home to school a group location was set up for walkers.
Students met at these locations and walked to school together, accompanied by adults as well as a police escort.
All three elementary schools, the middle school and the intermediate school in Durant participated in the event.
Mayor Jerry Tomlinson sent out an official proclamation naming Oct. 3, 2012, Walk and Roll to School Day in Durant in conjuction with the official International Walk to School Day.
The proclamation states that to help Durant children “develop and continue healthy lifestyles” the City of Durant will continue its partnership with the Durant School District on this event.
