A faith-based film featuring an Oklahoma program will hit theaters Friday, April 19. The movie based is in and was filmed in Okmulgee.
The film is about a Major League baseball player, Cory Brand, who is forced to go to his hometown and participate in a recovery program called Celebrate Recovery after a DUI charge gets him a team suspension.
While there, he causes an accident which renders his brother unable to continue coaching the local little league team.
He then must step in and deal with the pains of his past while changing his present self. The theme of the movie is “real change is possible through Jesus Christ.”
Celebrate Recovery is a real-life program that helps people with different kinds of habits hurts and hang-ups.
Many churches and businesses in the Durant area have been working to bring the movie to the movie theater in Sherman, Texas.
The First Baptist Church in Durant is one of the several organizations supporting the film which will be playing in 400 theaters in the U.S. and Canada on opening weekend.
Wanda Estus signed up to help promote the film and was joined in her efforts by Marilyn Dresser and Charlene Ridgway.
“We have pledged to pre-sell 1,000 tickets for opening weekend,” said Dresser. She said that they have met that goal.
This is part of the “batting 1,000” campaign to bring the movie to local movie theaters. Organizations around the country have taken the same pledge.
Dresser said because it is a faith-based film, it does not receive mainstream publicity and relies on grass-roots efforts such as the batting 1,000 campaign.
The film features the talents of Scott Elrod as Cory, Dorian Brown as Emma Hargrove and Vivica A. Fox as Helen Landy.
