Veterans Day parade to be held Saturday

On Saturday, Nov. 10, at 10:00 a.m. “Old Glory” will be flying high as the Durant Area Chamber of Commerce, Bryan County VFW Post 3916, DAV, and American Legion host the annual Veterans Day Parade in beautiful downtown Durant. This year’s parade theme is “Supporting Our Troops At Home & Abroad.”

The parade marshals for this year’s event are U.S. Army Corporal Sammy L. Woodell and U.S. Army National Guard Sergeant David E. Webb. The parade is open to businesses, individuals, clubs, organizations, and schools. Cash prizes will be presented in three categories. A ceremony to honor all veterans will be held on the Bryan County Courthouse lawn immediately following the parade. Everyone is encouraged to attend and join as we honor all veterans.

All veterans and their families are invited to attend a reception in their honor provided by Brown’s Funeral Home, 4900 US 70, immediately following the ceremony.

Corporal Sammy L. Woodell is a Vietnam veteran who was in combat in the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1970. Corporal Woodell was a Radio Man and with the C Company 3/12 Inf. 4 Inf. Div. He was in the United States Army and served as a Corporal E 4 for two years. He received an Honorable Discharge February 25, 1971, at Fort Hood Texas. Woodell was awarded seven different medals but the one of greatest value he received was the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm.

Sergeant David E. Webb is 29 year old and has served in the U.S. Army National Guard as a sergeant from 2000- 2012. He has served one tour to Iraq, one tour to Afghanistan, and one tour to Egypt. Sgt. Webb is a DAV from injuries sustained during multiple tours. He is married to Adela Webb and they have one son. The family moved to Durant in 2008.
