A house near Betty’s Short Stop north of Durant on Highway 48 burned Thursday evening.

Durant firefighters were dispatched at 8:54 and when they arrived four minutes later, the entire house was fully engulfed in flames that were shooting out of the roof.

Five fire trucks and 12 firefighters responded to the fire. Firefighters extinguished the fire from outside of the house and protected the surrounding area, according to a fire department report. The fire as brought under control in 37 minutes and firefighters left the scene at 11:59 that evening.

According to the fire department, there were no utility services to the house, and the structure was in the process of being torn down.

The cause of the fire, or the owner of the property, were not known at the time of the report.

In other news, a Choctaw County Sheriff’s deputy was killed and a Choctaw Tribal police officer was injured in a crash at 8:30 p.m. Thursday on Highway 70 west of Boggy River Bridge in Choctaw County.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the highway was closed for five-and-a-half hours until reopening at 2:00 this morning. Names have not been released and the cause of the crash is under investigation by OHP.
