Every year, the members of the Durant High School Student Council choose a non-profit organization to sponsor. This year, the students chose the up and coming Boys and Girls Club of Durant.

The event, called Put Your Heart Into It, gives students a chance to raise money for an organization in the community.

DHS teacher and student council advisor Amber Bullard said, “This is to help kids learn about community service and instill in them how important it is to give back to the community.”

The 2012 Put Your Heart Into It took place April 9 through April 13. This year’s fundraiser included many fun events such as powder puff football and a water balloon bonanza.

Local businesses also participated during this week by donating supplies or a portion of proceeds from its sales. Bullard said the student council would like to thank the following businesses: Rib Crib, Tradewinds, Roma’s, Cherry Berry, Marco’s, Chili’s, Main Street BBQ, Hot Shots, Big Lots and Indian Nation Wholesale.

She added that although the final counts weren’t yet in, she estimates the students raised $3,000 during the week.

Kari Walker of the Boys and Girls Club said, “We’re excited that the kids chose the Boys and Girls Club and decided to help make this club a success.”
