Durant City Council recognized Durant Police Lieutenant Chris Marcy during Tuesday’s council meeting for receiving the VFW Law Enforcement Public Servant Citation award.

Mayor Jerry Tomlinson said that he applauds Marcy for his service and hopes to see many more years of it.

Marcy joined the Durant Police Department approximately 12 years ago after being honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1998. Marcy had spent eight years serving in the Army.

During his time with the Durant PD, Marcy has earned several honors, including the Purple Heart in 2012 when he sustained major injuries while bringing a fleeing fugitive into custody.

“I was raised if you’re going to do something, do it and do it right,” said Marcy.

Also discussed in during Tuesday’s city council meeting were several road and sidewalk projects. The Council approved additional funds for the widening of South 9th Avenue.

The funds were also approved by the Durant Industrial Authority. According to city Manager Jim Dunegan, the estimated price was lower when the project was first proposed because of the difference in oil prices.

The project cost was estimated approximately three to four years ago. The funds will come from the city’s job creation funds to support the jobs that are created by nearby companies that rely on the road for easy access.

A project to patch cracked roads in Durant has been extended due to delays caused by weather. It was also suggested that the project get an annual budget so these repairs can be made at any time without specific council approval each time.

A grant was also accepted to make improvements to Waldron Drive in Durant. City council approved another grant from ODoT Safe Routes to School program as well.

This grant will allow for approximately 20 blocks worth of sidewalk benefiting Washington Irving Elementary and Durant Middle School.
