Saturday, Jan. 26, marked the first course in a new program by the Durant Police Department. The Durant PD’s Women’s Safety course began at 9 a.m. and lasted until 1 p.m.
Each course offered seats for approximately 20 to 25 people and consists of videos, live conversation and hands-on activities.
The course is in conjunction with the National Rifle Association of America’s (NRA) Refuse to be a Victim program.
Captain John Wyatt said that the class is designed to inform women how to react in several different situations.
He said that this will be an “evolving class” which will grow from what they participants say they want to learn.
At the next class Refuse to be a Victim handbooks will be given to participants and Wyatt plans to have a hands-on course with different firearms in the future.
Wyatt said the Durant PD does not have the schedule of the courses set up as of yet but plan to make this a monthly course.
Wyatt said that the hope is for this to evolve into different courses not only for women but for all citizens.
Wyatt revealed that much of the reason certain targets are chosen by predators is the mindset of the victim.
“If you stand up straight and walk like you have a purpose you won’t be the one they want to confront,” said Wyatt.
The course will discuss how your mindset can affect your safety and how to adjust your mindset to better protect yourself.
