A new locally created book named Choctaw: A Cultural Awakening went on sale yesterday. The book and some of its creators were at the Donald W Reynolds Community Center and Library selling signed copies of the book Tuesday.
The book is 200 pages of photos by David G. Fitzgerald accompanied by articles submitted by Choctaw Nation members and Employees.
Articles in the book tell about different aspects of the Choctaw ways of life. The photos are of Choctaw people from many different walks of life according to Judy Allen, one of the creators at the signing.
“I told the story of the Choctaw Church” said co-creator Eleanor Caldwell. She explained how growing up Choctaw, her family’s lives were focused on the church.
“Our everything stemmed from the church,” said Caldwell.
Allen said that this book had been on her wish list to produce for some time. She said that because it was made in spare time, it has been a lengthy process.
Another co-creator at the event Ian Thompson said the book is useful because it “shows the diversity of the tribe.”
Thompson said that the people in the book are everyday people that readers may interact with every day not realizing the impact that person has on the Choctaw Nation.
Allen said that the book has been donated to the Choctaw Nation and all of the proceeds go to the Choctaw Nation.
The book costs $35 and can be purchased at the Choctaw headquarters, the Choctaw book store and online at choctawstore.com.
