A vacant house burned early this morning in Durant.
Durant firefighters were dispatched at 3:25 a.m. to what was first reported to be a brush fire on South Fifth Avenue, but upon arrival, they discovered a vacant house at 314 S. Fifth Ave. was on fire.
Three additional fire trucks were dispatched and according to a department report, the fire was at the back of the home.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about 10 minutes, containing it to the back part of the structure. The rest of the house had smoke and water damage.
According to the fire department, the house had not been lived in for some time, although it did have electricity.
Firefighters remained on the scene until about 5 a.m. to “mop up” hot spots. City Fire Marshal Wade Boyd will be investigating the cause of the fire.
Richard Armstrong owns the house, according to the fire department.
In other news, two girls, ages 10 and 11, got lost in the woods in the Mead area on Highway 70 Saturday evening, according to the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office. A mother reported them missing at 6:40 p.m. and they were found at 9:28 that evening.
The girls told deputies they got lost in the woods and they found there way back to the highway by listening for automobiles and seeing headlights.
