Dear friends in law enforcement, as we enter this National Police Week, I would like to express my deep and abiding gratitude for your continuing service to all of the people of the City of Durant and Bryan County. Your dedication to serve and protect lives and property in our community often goes unrecognized. But today, I wish to stand and salute you for your willingness to put yourself on the line to promote and keep peace in our towns a...

Recent meeting on Pointe Vista provided new information
The recent meeting at the Kingston Schools to discuss Pointe Vista Development with Commissioners of the Land Office (CLO) did provide new information on the development. State Auditor Gary Jones and Agricultural Commissioner Jim Reese reacted to news in the Durant Daily Democrat. The Democrat exposed that Governor Mary Fallin had withheld from her fellow commissioners, a letter from Point Vista requesting an extension to the contract for d...

Reader says patrons of Silo School District should step up to the plate
One of our nation’s founders, Benjamin Franklin, once wrote, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interests.” This is precisely what patrons of the Silo School District will be asked to do next Tuesday, May 14 th . Public schools are only as good as the people and facilities which comprise them. Silo has a well-prepared, hard-working and caring staff that desperately needs the tools with which to work. I have no children; however, I have...

Silo teacher says bond is not out of greed, but of need
As a parent and teacher in the Silo Independent School District, I have a unique perspective on the needs of our students ranging from pre-k through twelfth grade. In the four years that I have been here, our enrollment numbers have increased exponentially. And, although we are a resourceful community, there is only so much we can do on our own. We have rearranged classroom assignments to foster a more age appropriate environment. We have a...

Reader says sheriff should attempt to manage jail with present budget
One part of Sheriff Ken Golden’s handling of the budget for the new jail is very disturbing to me. It may turn out that Sheriff Golden and the two assistants who have threatened to quit their jobs are right—That the jail cannot be adequately run with the present budget. Or they may be wrong: It could be that the money is sufficient. But, right now, not quite two months since the new jail opened, we don’t know. We won’t kn...

Silo Junior/High School Principal speaks about bond
We at Silo School have been disheartened and saddened in the past year when four times, our attempts to get funding for classroom space has failed. I would like to tell you about the current situation at our junior high and high school, and what a great school we have that should make our district residents proud. At 373 students in the Junior High/High School building, we have added 145 students in the past ten years. ...

Silo Elementary School principal says school is growing
Growth and progression are two words that characterize Silo Elementary. Just last Friday our students won the Bryan County Elementary Curriculum Meet for the 5 th year in a row! We’re very proud of our kids; however, our quest for excellence has been stifled by our lack of facilities to accommodate growth. We have outgrown our elementary building and have been forced to find alternatives for housing our students, such as portable buildings. ...

Readers praise pipeline protesters
We are writing to express appreciation for the courage shown by the three people who protested at the Keystone XL Pipeline site in Bennington, as reported in the “Durant Democrat” on April 17. The protesters undoubtedly have received lots of criticism from those who see this issue as a black-white one. Keystone is offering jobs, that argument goes, and the protesters were trying to prevent people from working at those jobs. But is the pipel...

Reader thanks commissioners and excise board
I take this opportunity to commend and also to thank both the Bryan County Commissioners and the Bryan County Excise Board for uniting behind the pledge made to voters who approved helping to fund the new jail in the beginning. As I mentioned in an earlier letter, not to reduce the operating budget for the jail would have been breaking that promise. The evidence indicates that the approved staffing well-managed will be adequate for running ...
