Hits were hard to come by for Southeastern on Sunday as the Savage Storm dropped a 7-0 decision to Southwestern in Great American Conference action at The Ballpark in Durant.

Monday’s doubleheader finale of the three-game series was cancelled because of overnight rain and will not be made up. The Savage Storm will continue their homestand on Friday against visiting Henderson State for a single game at 2 p.m.

It was a pitcher’s duel early on with Southeastern’s Hayden Grimes battling nearly pitch for pitch with Bulldog starter Brendan Peltsmeyer in the opening two stanzas.

Southwestern however took advantage of a hit batsman and misplayed fly ball to cash in a run in the third on a Ruben Rodriguez sacrifice fly.

That was just a sign of things to come however as the Bulldogs continually took advantage of opportunities to score when they got runners on base.

The visitors tacked on another run thanks to a Savage Storm error and a balk to increase the lead to 2-0 through three frames.

Southeastern finally managed to solve Peltsmeyer a bit in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff single up the middle by Travis Spinney, but he was immediately thrown out trying to steal.

Brett Akins walked and Hunter Harrison singled to left as it looked as if the hosts had something working. The rally was squelched however with a strikeout and groundout to second base.

Savage Storm starter Hayden Grimes worked out of a jam unscathed with two runners aboard in the fifth but Southeastern was unable to do anything with a Jett Swigart single in the bottom of the stanza.

Grimes continued to hold the Bulldogs at bay until the seventh when the visitors struck for three runs ignited by a Richard Marches leadoff home run to leftfield.

Batting ninth, Marches finished with a career day notching four hits while batting for the cycle, including a single, double and triple.

Cade Clay posted a single in the seventh and Micah Simmer had a pinch hit double in the eighth but that was all Peltsmeyer would allow in the complete game gem.

Southwestern tacked on single runs in the eighth and ninth against the Savage Storm bull pen for the final total.
