ROCK CREEK – The Calera Bulldogs fell to the Caddo Bruins in round one of the Bryan County Tournament on Tuesday night in overtime at 55-53.
Leading scorer for Caddo was Patrick Joines with 17 points followed up by Garrett McMichael who turned in 15 and Daniel Stone with 10 points toward the win for the Bruins.
For Calera, Bradley McKnight put up 26 points followed by Johnathon Diamond with 15 and Brayden Langley with 6 points.
Things started off well for the Bulldogs as McKnight, Childree and Diamond pulled in the lead for the first quarter of the game turning in 16 points including a 3 point swisher from McKnight at the buzzer. It was all Joines for the first round who put up three 3 pointers for the Bruins. Combined with a basket from Stone, it still left Caddo trailing by 5 with the score at 11-15 going into the second period.
McKnight started round two again with a bang by firing off another three pointer to start it off followed up by a basket from Caddo’s Stone. McKnight struck again with two shots for the Bulldogs that brought the score to 13-23 in favor of Calera. After suffering what appeared to be an ankle injury, McKnight skipped the remainder of the second quarter as Caddo put up another three points from Tad Bradley before closing out the period still trailing Calera at 16-23.
After a return by Bradley after the half, both teams returned to the court with a little more fire and Caddo working hard to close the gap in score turning in 14 points to Calera’s 13 and leaving the Bruins down by just 6 points to start the 4th period.
The Bruins burst out on a 6-0 run to start the 4th thanks to McMichael at the basket and tied it up for the first time at 36-36 with six minutes left to play. Both teams battled it out back and forth to mirror the score. In the final 20 seconds, Caddo created a turnover to the Bulldogs and following a timeout, Calera misses a shot to pull ahead. The clock ran out after a Caddo rebound and missed shot attempt that left the teams all tied up at 46-46 and headed into overtime.
Joines fired off the first three pointer in overtime for the Bruins that was followed up by a three pointer for the Bulldogs from McKnight before the Bruins set out on a 6-3 run. Calera made the last two shots from the free throw line by Diamond before another missed attempt at the line that stopped Calera as time wound down and Caddo sealed the win at 55-53.
