After a six game road trip, it was home-sweet-home for the Durant Lions basketball teams Friday night as they faced off against the Duncan Demons.
The Lady Lions (5-14) offense came alive in front of their home crowd and dominated the Lady Demons, 55-25. And the Durant boys (11-8) won a tough, highly contested ball game in the in the final minutes against the Demons, 38-36.
The Lady Lions took an impressive 14-2 lead at the end of the first period and never looked back as Durant beat the Lady Demons by 30 points.
The Lady Lions had a trio of double-digit players. Haley Morgan led the way with 16 points, on the back of three 3-pointers. Ciera Taylor had a good night in the post with 14 points and Breanna Simmons also had a good night under the bucket with 12 points. Presli Penz had 4 points and Bre Evans had 5 points, Tristan Hamilton chipped in 2 points and Cassidy McCann had 2 points.
The Lady Lions defense held Duncan to only two first period points as Durant’s Taylor scored 8 points, Morgan got a bucket and Simmons got two layups.
Not much scoring in the second period, but the Lady Lions won the period 8-5 and took a 22-7 halftime lead.
Duncan opened with a 3-pointer in the third period. Then Morgan answered back with a 3-pointer of her own. Duncan raced back down and got a layup. Then a 3-pointer by Morgan jump started a 10-2 run and the Lady Lions led 35-15 headed into the final period.
The Lady Lions didn’t let up in the fourth period as they outscored the Lady Demons 20-10 to win by a landslide, 55-25.
It was a defensive battle and it all came down to the final minutes of the fourth period as there were six lead changes between Durant and Duncan.
At the start of the fourth quarter, Duncan had a 28-26 lead. Durant’s Haroon Akhter hit from beyond the arc for the first lead change. Then Duncan went on a 4-0 run and led 32-29. Tyler Shade tied the game for Durant with a 3-point bucket.
With the score 32-32 with 4:30 left in the game. Duncan made another jumper and to break the tie. Then Shade found the bucket again with a three-point shot with a Demons in his face and the Lions led 35-34. The Duncan grabbed the lead back with a layup. But, Durant’s Taylor Cox drained a shot to give the Lions a 37-36 with 44 seconds left in the game.
Durant would miss three straight free throws, but Durant’s defense didn’t allow a Demon bucket for the rest of the game as Akhter closed out the scoring at the free throw line and Durant won, 38-36.
Taylor led the Lions in points with 10. Shade came away 8 points, Alex Steve had 6 points, Akhter finished with 7 points and Tre Harper and Layton Tubss both had 4 points each.
Next up for Durant is a road trip to Hugo on Feb. 2, 2016.
