Lions use long ball to beat Ada, 17-8

ADA — The Durant Lions (1-0) hit three homers to beat the Ada Cougars (0-2) for a 17-8 road win to open the 2016 baseball season.

The Lions offense was explosive as they scored 17 runs on 17 hits. Drew Smith, Brady Nichols and Brayden Green all hit home runs.

Brayden Green took the mound for the Lions and tossed three innings with five strike outs for the win. Gavin Daws and Dakota Finely came in as relief pitchers.

The Lions bats were hot in the first inning as they scored 10 runs on 9 hits.

Lead-off hitter Finley started the game with a double. Kolby Blake and Nichols both drew a walks to load the bases. Then Cade Buchanon hit a RBI single for Durant’s first run. Green would hit a RBI single into the left field and Matthew Knox hit a SAC-RBI.

Then Durant senior Drew Smith stepped into the batters box and smashed a 3-run homer over the right field wall. Then Cade Ogden hit a RBI single. With the bases loaded with Lions base runners, Nichols hit a line drive for a 2 RBI double and Buchanon rounded out the scoring with a SAC-RBI and the Lions led 10-0.

In the second inning, Ada cut into Durant’s lead with a 2-run homer and the Lions led 10-2.

Durant scored another run in the top of the third inning and Ada continued to close the gap in the bottom half of the inning with four runs and the Lions led 11-6.

Durant scored another run in the top of the fourth inning and led 12-6.

The Lions put the game with 5 runs in the fifth inning. Finley drew a walk and Blake hit a RBI single. Then Nichols dug into the batters box and hammered a 2-run homer. Buchanon then drew a walk and Green came up to bat and smoked a 2-run homer to give the Lions a 17-6 lead.

Ada scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and the Lions won a 17-8 run-rule victory to open the season.

The Lions will remain on the road as they head to Duncan on Saturday to play Piedmont at 2:30 p.m. and then play Duncan Demons at 5 p.m. Then the Lions will head over to Coweta for a 5 p.m. game on Monday. Then the Lions will turn around and play Coweta again on Tuesday, March 8th for their home opener at Lions Field.
