Reserve for Durant Police John Wyatt said this will be the first program ever at the Durant Police Department where officers and families are able to team up together for the holiday season.
He said this past Thanksgiving his reserves got the chance to team up with community leaders, the Meals on Wheels program and local schools around the area to feed over 110 people in the community.
This Christmas they plan to help out families in need with a special shopping trip with local officers to assist local families in need. Wyatt said his department was sent many referrals this year for the program and his officers want to develop this program as a yearly tradition at the police department.
He said he knows officers are here to protect and serve but sometimes it goes above and beyond and they need to help out with the home. He said there are many families locally that need a little extra help with getting Christmas this year and the officers are more then excited to be able to help those families out.
Thursday morning reserves and officers from the Durant Police Department plan to meet with many local families that are in need this year at the Walmart in Durant for the first ever shop with a cop.
