He was born Tuesday, April 16, 1918, in Calera, the second son of Ennis and Annie (Lyons) Carter. "Pete" as he was known by friends and family, married Sybil Hobbs Oct. 28, 1939, in Durant.
He was a retired farmer, dairyman and rural mail carrier. He also served for several years as a member of the board of the Rural Electrification Association. He was a member of Calera Masonic Rising Star Lodge No. 129. Upon retirement, he became an avid fisherman, and never missed an opportunity to try his luck. He led a full and productive life and will be missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Willard and Clifford.
He is survived by his wife of the home; son Jerry Carter and wife Linda, Galveston, Texas, and daughter Judy Nix and husband Erwin, Calera.
Also surviving are grandchildren Sherrie Varner and husband James, Calera, Relita Cayton and husband Terry, Calera, Jeff Carter, Seattle, Wash., Dean Carter, Houston, Texas, Terry Carter and wife Sherral, Hudsonville, Mich., and Shellie Abel and husband Dan, Kerrville, Texas.
Great-grandchildren are Lindsay and Emily Valles, Calera, Elizabeth, Tim and Katie Carter, Hudsonville, Colson Abel, Kerrville, Paige Carter and Blake Barrow, both of Garland, Texas, and Carter Cayton, Calera.
Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Calera, with pallbearers Terry Cayton, James Varner, Terry Carter, Dean Carter, Dan Abel and Frank Nix. Honorary pallbearer will be Oran Chappell. Masonic rites will be conducted at the gravesite.
Family hour is 4-5 p.m. today at the funeral home.
