Caddo vs. Rock Creek
CADDO - The host Bruins split a dandy county twinbill with Rock Creek here Friday night.
An excellent crowd turned out to see Rock Creek rally in the last half to defeat Caddo 57-50 and make it 13-7 while the Lady Bruins leveled out at 10-10.
The Bruins broke open a close game in the final period to top Rock Creek 71-59 and improve to 17-3 while the Mustangs moved to 11-10.
Caddo hosts Boswell Tuesday to celebrate Senior Night on the final home game of the season.
Rock Creek visits Rattan Tuesday.
Girls
Rock Creek's Natalie Aplin put the first point on the board at 7:19 when she hit 1 of 2 at the line.
Caddo's Tessa Price grab-bed a rebound and put it up and in 38 seconds later to put the Lady Bruins on top at 2-1.
Caddo trailed 7-4 and tied it on 3 of 4 free throws by Wendy Morris. The freebies and a basket by Jill Bearden put Caddo up by two, 9-7, at the end of the first stanza.
Caddo stretched the streak to 10 in a row with another Bearden bucket and a right-wing trey by Cassy Behrens to make it 14-7, Lady Bruins, with 6:55 left in the second quarter.
The hostesses outscored Rock Creek 14-8 in round two and forged an 8-point lead, 23-15, at halftime.
The Lady Mustangs battled back in the third period and Aplin buried a trey from the left corner to make it 27-25, Caddo, with 4:21 to play in round three.
It was 31-29, Caddo, when Aplin struck from long range again, this one falling from the right wing to make it 32-31, Rock Creek, at the 2:14 mark.
The visitors held a 4-point edge, 37-33, going into the final quarter.
Caddo regained the lead at 46-45 on Tessa Price's straight-on trey with 2:33 left in the game. That was the first of four lead changes in 49 seconds. The flurry ended with Rock Creek ahead 49-48 and 1:44 to go.
Caddo coach Teenie Baxter said, "My girls played hard, but we had a bad third quarter when we gave up 22 points and scored only 10. We just ran out of gas in the fourth. Fatigue caught up with us."
Caddo was without senior Christi Duncan due to the death of her grandmother.
Boys
This one had just one low-scoring quarter as Caddo knocked in 22 points to Rock Creek's 17 in the first eight minutes to set the pace.
It was knotted at two, 11 and 17, the last tie coming when Rock Creek got a basket and 1 of 2 free throws from Chris Roberts with 41 seconds to go.
Caddo's Ray Stephens threw in a trey and Tyler Nickles goaled off a steal to make it 22-17, Bruins, after one.
Rock Creek scored four in a row to knot it at 28 with 4:20 left in the second stanza. Caddo's Spencer Phipps hit 2 of 2 at the line and RC's Jared Whitaker answered with a trey after strong defense wouldn't allow him to pass the ball.
The trey changed the lead with Rock Creek going ahead 31-30 and it lasted 24 seconds until Caddo's Rob Frederick scored off an offensive rebound to put the Bruins ahead and start a 6-point splurge that led to a 36-31 edge for Caddo with 2:25 to play before intermission.
The teams traded baskets and Rock Creek's Matt Rose banked in a three-pointer from behind the free-throw line to make it 38-36, Caddo, at the half.
The pace slowed considerably in round three and Caddo hit 11 to Rock Creek's eight, increasing the margin to five points, 49-44, going into the final eight minutes.
The Bruins pulled away with a 22-15 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter, riding streaks of eight and seven points that started with 1:28 to go in round three.
Caddo's Chance Hodge led all scorers with 21 points. He hit 7 of 8 free throws, had three steals and a whopping 17 rebounds.
Sophomore Rob Frederick had an outstanding game with 16 points, four boards and three steals.
Phipps and Stephens scored 11 each for Caddo with Phipps nailing 7 of 11 freebies, grabbing two rebounds and collecting four steals. Stephens was 1 of 2 at the line with two treys and two boards.
Nickles added nine points with 2 of 2 free throws, one three-pointer, two rebounds, a team-high four assists and three steals.
Nick Finley came off the bench to hit one trey that came with 1:28 left in the third quarter and started an 8-2 run for Caddo that moved the game from 46-44, Bruins, to 54-46 with 6:22 remaining.
Roberts topped Rock Creek with 20 points, 5 of 7 at the line and one trey.
Whitaker scored 17 with one three-pointer for the Mustangs and Spencer Gerrard was in double figures with 10 and 2 of 4 freebies.
Caddo coach Don Tidwell said, "Rock Creek played well. Jared Whitaker gave us trouble inside. I thought the difference was our press again. We handled the ball pretty well.
"Rob Frederick had a heck of a second quarter. He scored 12 of our 16 points.
"I was disappointed with our team rebounding. Chance Hodge had 17, but we need others on the boards, too.
"I thought we maintained our poise pretty well. Overall, it was a good win. Last year at their place, we had to come from behind.
"We host Boswell Tuesday and we'll have to play better to win. I'm expecting a good effort because it's our final home game and also Senior Night."
Achille vs. Kiowa
ACHILLE - The Lady Eagles continued their winning ways with a come-from behind victory over Kiowa at Homecoming Friday. Achille won 45-38 after trailing the first half. The boys hung close before Kiowa opened the gate in the third quarter during a 60-43 loss.
Achille will be back at home Tuesday when Soper comes to town for a 6:30 p.m. girls' tipoff.
Girls
Kiowa opened the contest with a 13-9 first quarter and extended the lead 29-20 at the half. Whitney Word paced the visitors with a game-high 21 points.
Achille was led by Jennifer Watson and Brittiany Clonch with 14 points each. Watson led the perimeter shooting with two treys and Clonch scored half of her points at the stripe with seven of 10 shooting.
The Lady Eagles advanced to 18-2 by inching back in the third quarter, 10-8, and shutting down Kiowa's tough offense in the final period. Achille outscored its opponents 11-5 in the fourth quarter.
Amber Williams added seven points to the tally with a three-of- four night at the line. Jonda Robinson added six and Cassie Osborn hit a three-pointer and a free throw to round out the scoring with four.
Boys
The Eagles stayed in striking distance in the first half with a 12-9 first quarter in favor of Kiowa. The visitors built a 28-21 lead at the half before responding with a 20-8 third quarter.
Kiowa's Branton Nichols led all scorers with 20 points, followed in double figures by Parker Mason at 19, including four treys.
Logan Sinor was the only Eagle in double figures with 18 points. Josh Little added nine on a four of four night at the charity stripe. Kelby Johnson had two free throws and a basket outside for five points.
The Eagles' younger players got some work in a 14-12 Achille-led fourth quarter. Freshman Gerald Pilkinton had a strong finish with three steals inside of one minute.
