DURANT - Improving the state budget, including restoring money to two programs that had been cut previously, is the accomplishment Sen. Jay Paul Gumm and Rep. John Carey seem to be most proud of following the close of the State Legislature's regular session May 28.

Gumm, state senator for District 6, and Carey, state representative for District 21, were both elected in 2002, meaning the two just finished their second regular session as legislators.

According to Gumm, legislators were told about a budget shortfall of more than $670 million at the first budget briefing for the 2003 session.
