Herbert was born Sept. 12, 1921, in Durant to Thomas Floyd and Mary Jane (Hoover) Crawford. Herbert attended school in Platter. He joined the Army Sept. 24, 1942, and was involved in five major campaigns during World War II. He received the Good Conduct Medal, EAME Theater Ribbon with one Silver Service Star and one Bronze Arrowhead World War II Victory Ribbon. Herbert married Christine Dansby May 3, 1943, in Calera. He enjoyed visiting with friends and family and telling them his war stories. He also raised cows and enjoyed taking care of them. Herbert was a member of Liveoak United Pentecostal Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Mary Crawford; his wife, Christine Crawford; infant son, Herbert Cloyce Crawford; brothers, Haskell, Howard and Harold; and sister, Lucille.
Survivors include son, Stanley Crawford and wife Nona of Calera; daughters, Martha Culbreath and husband Randy of Calera, Mary Lynn Wade and husband Homer of Mead, Miriam Bishop and husband Steve of Durant, and Bonnie Harris and husband Dennis of Norman; son Lonnie Crawford and wife Debra of Colbert; grandsons, Dean Crawford of Calera, Eric Crawford and wife Freda, Britt Roberts, James Bishop and Andrew Bishop, all of Durant, Alex Crawford of Colbert, Christopher Harris and wife Angela of Edmond and Clayton Harris of Norman; granddaughters, Melissa Crawford-Reddick and husband Matt of Calera, Amy Quarles and husband Aaron of Denison, Tamyra Rhymes and husband Dallas and Paige Bishop, all of Durant; great-grandchildren, Aaron Crawford and wife Heather, Ashley Crawford, Bridgett Crawford, Maegan Crawford, Nathan Crawford, and Kye Roberts; great-great-grandchild, Landon Dean Crawford; sister Zona Mae Taylor of Durant; many other relatives and a host of friends.
Family hour will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Interment will be at Fort Washita Cemetery with Eric Crawford, Chris Harris, Dean Crawford, James Bishop, David Ledford and Aaron Crawford serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Robert Swink, Paul Satterfield, Bruce Moore, Gene Ledford and Bill Kerby.
