He was born to Richard Monroe Hayes and Idabell Hibdon Hayes on Oct. 26, 1913, in Eldon, Mo. He was the youngest of nine children, all of whom are deceased. In 1917, at the age of 4, his family traveled to Pleasant Hill near Caddo in a covered wagon. The trip took 21 days. In 1939 he married Margaret Rush, and they had three children, A.V. Jr. “Gabby” Hayes of Durant, Clarice McCoy of Dallas, Texas, and Mina Budzilowski of Texarkana, Texas. Of these are seven grandchildren and three step-grandchildren, Kelly Hayes and wife Melissa, Ontario, Calif., Alfred and Virginia Hayes, Durant, Terri Hayes, Houston, Texas, David Rowe and wife Connie, Texarkana, Teresa Hackett and husband Travis, Texarkana, David McCoy, Dallas, Dawn McCoy, Nashville, Tenn., Mark and Toni Budzilowski, Texarkana, Teri Pulse, Texarkana, Paula and Gerald Bishop, Marshall, Texas, and two great-grandchildren. One sister, Sadie Welborn, was a long-time resident of Durant. Of her nine children, five still live in Durant: Ray Welborn, Larry Welborn, David Welborn, Joan Welborn, and Sondra Mayes.
He met Martha Shipman in 1998 while on a trip with the Baptist Senior group “the Road Runners” and they were married Jan. 13, 1999 in Coalgate. With Martha he had two step daughters, Linda Caraway and husband John, Durant, Mary Kathryn Adcock and husband Max, Dallas; four step sons, Hershel Levine and wife Mila, Boston, Mass., Don Beshirs and wife Beverly, Roberta, Joe Beshirs and wife Ruth, Denison, Larry Beshirs and wife Marsha, Duncan, and many grand and great-grandchildren who loved him dearly.
He was a farmer and rancher. He worked on the Katy Railroad, Tulsa Air Craft, Fort Worth Aircraft and 20 years at the Bonham and Durant sale bans. He was well known for his hunting dogs and his love for wolf and coon hunting. He was a deacon for more than 50 years at Albany Baptist Church and currently attended Grace Baptist. He leaves behind many, many dear friends. He will be greatly missed.
Family hour will be at 6 p.m. Friday at Coffey-Murray Funeral Home.
Burial will be in the Albany Cemetery with grandchildren as pallbearers.
