There are two ceremonies in our area that continue that tradition.
At 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Cemetery, the VFW Post No. 3916 is sponsoring a program with guest speakers State Sen. Jay Paul Gumm and State Rep. John Carey.
A prayer will be offered by Chaplain Troy Coleman, followed by the raising of the American Flag while the National Anthem is played. Flags will then be lowered to half staff.
Rifle squads will fire a salute before Taps is played.
Cmd. Larry Marlow will welcome the people who have gathered to help decorate the graves and the Ladies Auxiliary will place a wreath for the Unknown Soldier.
The VFW will have flags to place on all veteran's graves.
A ceremony will also be held at the Garden of Memory Cemetery in Colbert at 10 a.m. Monday.
The Durant VFW will present the flag. Attendees are asked to bring their own lawn chair.
Durant Sterling House is hosting a senior “Rally Around the Flag” at 1:30 p.m. Memorial Day. The residents will release red, white and blue balloons in honor of all veterans who have served in and are now serving in the armed forces.
Sterling House is also providing a brisket luncheon for family and friends as a salute to veterans who served during the Korean, World War I and World War II conflicts. Reservations should be made before 5 p.m. Sunday by calling 931-0600.
