There is excitement in the air at Durant High School, as Homecoming festivities are coming to a head Thursday and Friday.
Students and faculty at the school have been participating in daily themes in order to raise spirit for the big game this Friday, and the final plans are being made for the Homecoming parade.
Line up for the parade will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday at 12th and Arkansas by Pizza Hut, and the parade will begin at 6:30, traveling down to First Avenue.
Teacher Stephanie Lowry said she does not have a total number of float entries, but she is expecting the parade to be large. Each high school grade, the football team, little league footballers, cheerleaders and homecoming candidates will be in the parade, as well as other groups and organizations that wish to participate.
A pep rally will follow the parade in the main high school parking lot.
Friday's festivities begin with the coronation of the homecoming queen at 7 p.m., and the game against the McAlester Buffalos begins at 7:30 p.m.
Cheerleading coach LouAnn Lively has invited all former Durant High Cheerleaders to the game to be recognized during half time.
Durant is entering the game with two losses, followed by three straight wins, so the Lions have the momentum to beat the Buffs, 2-3, which has certainly spurred on the spirit at DHS.
“There is a lot of school spirit and a lot of participation in theme days,” Lowry said. “I'd like to see a huge crowd for the game and lots of support for the school.”
