Police investigate grocery thefts

DURANT - Fishing rods, steaks and shrimp are among items stolen during the past few days.

Wednesday afternoon, store personnel at Nichols Dollar Saver captured a suspected steak stealer. According to a report by Patrolman Dustin Thornton, the butcher saw a man grab a steak and walk past the check-out aisles.

The report stated that the suspect said he did not know why he stole the steak because he could have paid for it. He was issued a citation for shoplifting and released.

In other thefts at the grocery store, two shrimp bandits made off with a two-pound bag of frozen shrimp Tuesday afternoon. According to a report by Patrolman Bryan Moore, two men entered the store and one tried to conceal the bag of shrimp.

An employee tried to catch the shrimp thieves but they got away.

Patrolman Brock Jones investigated a burglary Wednesday in the 1400 block of West Mulberry. The victim told the officer that when she returned home, she discovered a door open and her lap top computer was gone. Nothing else was stolen.

A man told Moore on Monday that six fishing poles had been stolen out of his boat while it was parked at a residence in the 2900 block of North First Avenue. At the time of the theft, a resident saw someone trying to steal a stereo from a vehicle parked nearby and called police, but the suspect was gone when police arrived.

Early this morning, a driver told Patrolman Thornton that his rear window of his truck had been shot out with an air gun. According to Thornton's report, the man was driving at in the 300 block of Northeast Third Avenue when he heard a loud pop and saw that his window shattered. The victim then saw several juveniles on the railroad overpass, according to the report. No arrests were made.

Tuesday morning, Deputy Rocha Louis was dispatched to the Colbert substation on Stidham Lane to take a theft report. According to the report, someone climbed the fence and stole $500 worth of copper wire.
