A Bennington man accused of gunning down his father but later found to be mentally incompetent to stand trial no longer shows signs of mental illness, according to a state psychologist's report.

Craig Ryan Andrews, 29, was charged in March with first-degree murder for the shooting death of his father, Steve Andrews, 63.

He was ruled incompetent in May and committed to the Oklahoma Forensic Center in Vinita for treatment to obtain competency.

According to the forensic center, Andrews no longer showing signs of mental illness and does not meet the statutory criteria as a person needing treatment.

A report by Dr. Peter Rausch, a forensic psychologist with the Oklahoma Forensic Center states, “He has received a course of treatment and is no longer reporting or exhibiting any substantial symptoms or signs of mental illness ... He is not considered a present danger; however, this opinion is limited to the present time period and is contingent on his remaining compliant with his psychiatric treatment and abstaining from using alcohol or illicit drugs. Lastly, he exhibited an appreciation of the nature of his charge and the capacity to assist counsel with his defense.”

Andrews was brought back to the Bryan County Jail Wednesday evening.

Authorities arrested Andrews March 13 after receiving a call about a shooting at the Andrews' home on Midland Road.

According to the sheriff's office, the younger Andrews retrieved a .243-caliber hunting rifle and shot his father to death who was reading in a recliner. Investigators said Andrews then walked to a neighbor's home and told him about the shooting.

He confessed to the murder and claimed God told him to shoot his father, according to an affidavit.

Andrews had made prior threats against his father, according to the sheriff's office, but had no prior records for violent crimes.

The criminal case against Andrews had been put on hold but it will now continue since he has obtained mental competency.
