CARTWRIGHT— Fifteen dump truck loads of trash was collected in the Cartwright area during the trash-off day.
A trash-off day was held Saturday throughout the county, and in Cartwright, a record amount of rubbish was collected, according to District No. 1 Commissioner Monty Montgomery.
The 15 dump truck loads hauled by county workers included one load of tires.
“We’ve got refrigerators, couches, all kinds of furniture ... vacuum cleaners, we’ve probably got a whole dump truck load full of tires,” Montgomery said. “We’ve never seen anything like it. We’ve still got people coming in this (Monday) morning.
“We hauled two loads (Monday) morning and didn’t even make a dent in it.”
Most of the trash was hauled to the Durant Landfill, according to Montgomery, and some people took items that had scrap value to a scrap yard. The truck load of tires was brought to the county barn and will be turned over to a company in Ada that handles them.
The county supplied dump trucks to haul the trash. According to Montgomery, Sonny Reeves hired people to pick up trash in the area, and Gerald Bowers coordinated the efforts in the Cartwright community.
The rubbish was collected at a vacant lot on Willafa Woods and Boat Club roads.
“It was just overwhelming,” Montgomery said. “It was a huge pile of trash. It was just a good time for people to get their junk cleaned up. Those people in Cartwright really went all out to try to clean things up.”
Montgomery said that Bowers apologized about the large amount of trash.
“I said, ‘Look, that’s what this is for. We’re glad that all of the trash was picked up,”’ Montgomery said.
Montgomery encourages communities to continue picking up litter.
“It doesn’t have to be in conjunction with trash-off,” he said. “Anytime a community wants to get together, we’ll supply trash bags and we’ll come and pick it up.”
