DURANT — A Mead man accused of leading authorities on a chase while he had an unrestrained child in the car has been charged with four crimes.

Joe Cruz Martinez, 50, was charged in Bryan County District Court with first-degree burglary, attempting to elude a police officer, child abuse and violating a protective order. He was arrested Wednesday evening in Kingston.

The incident started after authorities were dispatched to a Howery Loop home in Mead that evening after a woman called and said that Martinez, her ex-boyfriend, was attempting to break in.

According to court papers, Martinez took their 4-year-old child and left the residence traveling in a pickup.

Deputy Kevin Nave saw the pickup as it turned west onto Highway 70, according to an affidavit. Nave activated his emergency lights and a pursuit began.

Nave notified Marshall County authorities as the pursuit continued across the Roosevelt Bridge into Marshall County, the affidavit states. Nave used the PA system on his patrol car to talk to Martinez and tried to convince him to stop.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol responded and Martinez went through two roadblocks, according to the patrol, and the chase continued onto Kingston city streets.

Authorities declined to use a tactical vehicle maneuver to knock Martinez’s truck off the road because the unrestrained child was visible in the front seat, the patrol said.

Martinez turned east back onto Highway 70, according to troopers, and attempted to run over OHP Capt. Ronnie Hampton, who was manning a stationary roadblock.

Authorities, with the help of Kingston Police, stopped Martinez approximately two miles east of Kingston, according to Nave’s affidavit.

He was arrested and booked into the Bryan County Jail. The child was not harmed, although Martinez was charged with child abuse for having the boy with him while trying to elude police.

OHP expects additional charges of assault and battery with a deadly weapon — an automobile — to be filed in Marshall County.
