Team members from the SE Savage Storm will be teaming up with the Durant Main Street Program and members from the Durant community this upcoming Saturday, March 5. for a little Spring cleaning in the downtown area.

Main Street Coordinator Beverly Hemphill said the Main Street program is more then excited to be teaming up with the guys this weekend. She said starting at 8 a.m., members from the Savage Storm team plan to tackle many areas downtown that are in need of some cleaning.

In the late Summer of 2010 the annual Durant Trash Off was also held all across the Durant area where many citizens from all over Bryan County area came together to pick up trash and other unwanted materials.

Hemphill said she plans to get the downtown Durant area back to it’s regular look after winter weather flurries over the past few months. She said the team plans to get the area back to its cleanliness and head out around noon.

SE Savage Storm Head Coach Ray Richards said the special project is free of charge and he plans for the team to pick up trash, rake leaves and help many of the Durant elderly citizens or those who can’t otherwise perform the work themselves.

If you would like to have the team pick up trash, rake leaves or any other general yard work please contact Mr. Richards at 745-2468 or send him an e-mail at rrichards@se.edu

If you would like to make a donation to the SE cleanup program please send a check payable to, Southeastern Foundation- Football, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Football Office, C/O Ray Richards, 1405 North 4th Avenue, PMB 4192, Durant, OK 74701.

In other events, The Bryan County Relay for Life is literally right around the corner this year.

Last year was my fifth year to walk in the relay after being diagnosed with cancer when I was 13 years-old.

The big night will be held on April 29 at the newly remodeled Paul Laird Field on the SOSU campus and teams are currently being formed all over the Durant and Bryan County area. If you are in a team then you realize how important it is to raise as much money as possible for the big night.

The funds raised from the Relay for Life event is then put back into research to help find a cure for this life-taking disease.

Relay for Life in Bryan County is one experience that you will never forget with activities planned throughout the night.

Next week I plan to take readers through my personal cancer survival story as we begin to prepare for the big Relay for Life extravaganza!
