In the opener, the Lions blanked Dickson, 10-0, in a four-inning run rule before falling to Class 6A Westmoore, 7-0, in the nightcap.
The Lions were slated to finish play in the festival against Rattan on Saturday and then host Valliant in it’s next action on Tuesday at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex.
Against Dickson, senior lefty Terry Gaskey fired a complete game gem, yielding three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks for the pitching victory.
Durant wasted little time in the contest, plating a pair of runs in the first as Josh Brown ignited the charge with a leadoff single while Keaton Webb contributed a RBI. Brown was the catalyst again in the second stanza by making it a 4-0 lead with a two-run double ahead of a Hunter Stephens run-scoring triple. Derrick Haworth chipped in a two-run single and Colby Hicks drove in a run with a double of his own.
Brown added his third hit with a RBI single in the third as Stephens tossed in another run-scoring hit and Tyler Hendley wrapped it up with a triple.
Facing a strong Westmoore club in the second game, the Lions couldn’t string together enough production in dropping their first contest of the season.
Stephens got the pitching start and worked two scoreless frames before the Jaguars erupted for five runs in the third, capitalizing on two walks, a hit batsman and four singles. Derrick Haworth followed with three innings of relief, scattering five hits along with two runs. Bruce Rochelle worked a scoreless seventh, striking out three batters.
Tanner Gwin notched a pair of hits, including a double to lead the Durant offense. Stephens and Hendley also contributed singles.
Also, Durant’s sub-varsity baseball squad improved to 2-0 on Friday with a 10-0 run-rule victory over Sherman behind a complete game shutout from Austin Joines. The freshman hurler scattered four hits, struck out three and didn’t walk a batter.
The Lions scored in every inning, plating two in the first, four in the second, two in the third and two in the fourth to end it early.
Joines and Austin Jestis sparked the offensive attack with two hits and one RBI apiece. Jase Hammock, Brandon Maynard, Alex Brooks, Ryan Boehme, Zack Lively, Derrick Penz and Zach Cater added one hit each.
The sub-varsity squad returns to action on Monday, travelling to Boswell for a doubleheader with Boswell and Achille starting at 4 p.m.
