DURANT – On Saturday, May 14, Durant letter carriers will help “Stamp Out Hunger” by collecting non-perishable food donations from households on their route. All food and fund donations collected in Durant will go to St. Catherines and Loaves & Fishes.

This is part of the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s Feeding Hope and Letter Carriers’ Food Drive, which is a one-day food drive in 83 cities in central and western Oklahoma.

“This summer, the Regional Food Bank expects the demand for food to increase,” said Steve Riggs, food drive co-chair. “The rise in food and gas prices, along with children being out of school, will drive more families to local pantries, like St. Catherines and Loaves & Fishes, for weekly groceries. We encourage residents to join us in the fight against hunger. Every can and every dollar helps!.”

To help “Stamp Out Hunger” in Durant, fill the plastic donation bag you receive in your mailbox the week of May 9th, or any plastic donation bag, with non-perishable food donations by 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 14th. Most needed items include: canned meats, meat-based soups, canned fruits, canned vegetables, peanut butter, and rice and beans. Monetary donations can also be made online at regionalfoodbank.org, by calling 405.972.1111 or by texting “Can” to 27722 to make a $10 donation (data and message rates apply). Every dollar donated will provide seven meals for a hungry neighbor in need.

Canned food donations can also be dropped off at participating post offices.

Last year, Durant postal carriers collected more than 8,700 pounds of food.

“We have a lot of people who come every month to get assistance from our food pantry,” said one partner agency. “The stories are all similar. Food Stamps do not stretch far enough; Social Security checks won’t stretch far enough.”

Canned food donations can also be dropped off at participating post offices.

Last year, the Regional Food Bank collected 857,000 pounds of food and $701,000 in 51 cities through the Feeding Hope and Letter Carriers Food Drive, according to food bank officials. This year, the Regional Food Bank hopes to collect enough food and monetary donations to keep pace with the summer demand for food assistance, which continues to rise.
