Coach Darin Grover’s gals reported Tuesday and coach Kelly Green’s guys started today.
One doubleheader remains before the Great American Conference race to the finish line. SE will host Northeastern with the women tipping off at 5:30 p.m. Monday, January 2, 2012. The men will follow at 7:30.
The first GAC competition begins with Southeastern at Southern Arkansas January 5, then it’s on to Arkansas-Monticello January 7.
January 12 will mark the first GAC matchup in Southeastern’s Bloomer Sullivan Arena when Henderson State comes to town.
SE’s ladies will take on the Lady Reddies in the opener and the men will go against the Reddies in the nightcap.
Ouachita Baptist is here January 14 with its Lady Tigers and Tigers.
GROVER’S GALS will be trying to snap an unexpected three-game losing streak.
The Storm come in at 4-5 after falling to Central Oklahoma on the road, St. Mary’s at home and Northeastern on the road to end the first semester.
The practice schedule may look more like boot camp with some bad habits to break. The young ladies simply haven’t been able to knock down shots.
No matter how much else goes well, a team simply has to score to win games.
When shots are falling, other shortcomings tend to be overlooked. Not by coaches, of course, but by fans and sometimes players.
There is a cure for the shooting woes and the team will be hot on its trail from now until Northeastern rolls into town.
The ladies will host Golden Suns and Cotton Blossoms in the conference chase. Fans will also see Lady Reddies, Muleriders and Bisons, two bunches of Tigers and plain old Bulldogs.
Whitney Coffey, Nikki Nester, Bailey Welch, Ashley Hobbs and Ali Stone have started in every game for the Storm.
Coffey is the leading scorer with 15 points per game and Nester is second at 11 ppg. Welch barely misses double figures at 9.2 points per game.
Hobbs tops the window cleaners with 5.6 boards per outing and Coffey is second with 4.7 rebounds.
Stone leads the way at the charity stripe with a .909 mark on 10 of 11 attempts. Nester has made 26 of 32 for an .813 percentage and Welch is at .773 on 34 of 44.
Nester leads the way with 45 assists and Welch is second with 38.
Hobbs is shooting .367 on 11 of 30 and Nester is .351 on 13 of 37 from beyond the arc.
GREEN’S GUYS will be trying to extend a two-game winning streak.
The Storm went on the road and knocked off Dallas Baptist by two points after an earlier home loss to DalBap by 25 points.
The Southeastern men defeated Northeastern to make it two in a row and end the first half on a high note.
Like the ladies, the men are also heading into a 16-game conference stretch that will give fans the opportunity to see Wonder Boys and Boll Weevils in Bloomer Sullivan Arena.
Also coming are Reddies, Muleriders, two sets of Tigers, Bulldogs and Bisons.
Yes, Harding University teams are Bisons with an “s” on the end.
Next season the GAC will feature the Savage Storm of Southeastern and the Crimson Storm of Southern Nazarene.
Urald King and Zac Downing have started every game this season. King is the leading scorer at 14.4 points per game and Downing is second at 11.7 ppg.
Ivan Johnson is in double figures with 11 points per game. Dami Sapara (8.2) and Steven Kohli (7.9) are close to double figures.
King barely misses a double-double with 9.9 rebounds per game. Sapara and Kohli are each grabbing 6.4 boards per outing.
Downing is shooting .384 on 28 of 73 and Johnson .357 on five of 14 three-pointers.
Downing leads the way on .826 (19 of 23) and Johnson is at .816 (40 of 49) at the free-throw line.
Sapara has 27 steals and Kohli has turned in 10 blocks.
Game time is 5:30 p.m. Monday, January 2, when the Storm will host Northeastern in a doubledip at Bloomer Sullivan Arena.
