Cassadi Jones led the Lady Eagles with 20 points, followed by 13 from Michaela Woodall. Amy Roesler added eight, while Maegan Crawford and Amanda Thompson scored four apiece. Woodall and Amber Bruce each collected four rebounds on the night.
“We started out really sluggish in the first half,” VLA Coach Jacob Sheriff said. “What we emphasized coming out was being aggressive and executing our offense. Once (Soper) got in foul trouble, our strategy was to take it to the hole.
“This game was won on the free throw line,” Sheriff said. Indeed, Jones went 13-for-18 from the line.
Soper led 15-19 after one quarter, and extended the lead to 29-22 at halftime. The Lady Eagles did not make up much ground in the third, trailing 39-33 going into the final eight minutes. VLA got the lead back by outscoring the Lady Red Bears 16-8 in the fourth.
The Lady Eagles are now 13-7 heading into Friday’ district playoff showdown in Caney. VLA will face Bennington at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the district opened hosted at Caney.
