Evelyn Lena Thomas was born on Monday, January 5, 1920 in Brown, OK to Archie Euel and Margaret (Krause) Hicks and passed from this life on Monday, February 13, 2012 at the age of 92 years, 1 month and 8 days. Evelyn attended and graduated from Cobb School and received her Bachelor’s Degree from Murray State College. Evelyn taught school in Texas and after retirement she moved back to Bryan County and continued to substitute teach. She married James Bud “JB” Thomas on November 27, 1940 in Durant and they spent 67 years together until JB’s passing in 2007. She was a member of Nida Baptist Church and she enjoyed cooking, gardening and being a “farm girl”.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her mother Margaret Hicks; father and step mother Archie and Hannah Hicks; infant daughter Pamela Kay Thomas; 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

Those loved ones left behind to cherish her memory are her children James Lewis Thomas and wife Sue of Durant, Larry Gene Thomas of Denison, TX, Ronnie Dean Thomas and wife Judy of Nida, Ok and Kristi Lyn Guiou and husband Brent of Terrell, TX; brothers J.W. Hicks and wife Zelda of Durant and Edward Hicks and wife Cookie of California; sister Dorothy Testerman of Marietta; grandchildren Josh Thomas, Jennifer Thomas, Robert Thomas, Dakota Thomas, Matthew Thomas, Misty Thomas, Amanda Guiou, Justin Guiou, Rebecca Moody, Ginger Jones, Keith Giles and Robin Giles; 14 great grandchildren; and other extended family and friends.

A celebration of Evelyn’s life will be held on Friday, February 17, 2012 at 10:00 AM at Brown’s Funeral Service Chapel. Bro. Howard Stanley will officiate. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery with Josh Thomas, Robert Thomas, Dakota Thomas, Matthew Thomas, Justin Guiou and Judy Thomas serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Mike Lee, Jon Jackson, Ron Clark and Keith Giles. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home on Thursday from 6-8 PM.
