Caney will take on the Class A No. 2 Rattan Rams at 4 p.m. today (Friday). Rock Creek faces a noon Friday contest against Turner.
The Cougars improve to 7-4 with Thursday’s win. “Right now we’re really swinging the bats well, it’s our bright spot,” said Caney Baseball Coach Matt Brister. “Our pitching is coming around, and we’re just playing better baseball.”
Caney jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings before the Mustangs got three straight hits from Joe Phillips, Kodi From and David Dill. Phillips and From were able to score, cutting the Caney lead to 5-2.
Dill stretched a sixth inning single into a run to claw away at the Cougar lead, which was then 5-3. But a five run seventh inning sealed the win for Caney.
Dill was 2-3 with two singles, two stolen bases and a run scored; Bronson Burns was 2-3; Tanner McCann was 2-2 with a double and single; RBIs went to Sawyer Halcomb and Leo Roper. From was tagged for the loss despite seven strikeouts over 6.1 innings of work.
Stand-outs for Caney included Chase Crites (2-4 with two runs), Garrett Whatley (2-3, RBI), Shane Scott (3 RBIs, 2 runs) and Haskell Lawless (double, 3 RBIs). Garrett Green picked up a complete game win on the Mound.
