School board accepts donations

The members of the Durant ISD Board of Education met for their monthly meeting on Monday. During the meeting, the discussed the acceptance of a monetary donation in the amont of $4,5440 from the Partners of Education, Durant Public School Foundation.

Assistant Superintendent Larry Scott said, “We’ve been working for years to get the cost of school supplies down to $30 or less for our elementary students. This donation will help get us there by purchasing things such as construction paper and scissors.”

The board voted to approve the donation.

The members also accepted a monetary donation in the amount of $4,100 from the Durant Athletic Booster Club.

Superintendent Jason Simeroth said the club has “done a really good job of helping groups target special needs.”

In other news, the board approved bids for band instruments for Durant High School and approved an overnight out-of-state trip for Durant High School HOSA students to Orlando, Florida, to participate in the HOSA National leadership Conference on June 19-24, 2012.

The school board voted to approve the district’s memberships in the following educational organizations for the 2012-2013 school year: Oklahoma State Boards Association, Oklahoma Curriculum Improvement Commission, Oklahoma Technology Association, United Suburban Schools Association, Texoma Association of Public School Improvement, Bryan County Administrators Association and Oklahoma Public Schools Unemployment Compensation Trust Account.

New hires for the 2012-2013 school year are as follows: Juliane Sicking, kindergarten teacher at Robert E. Lee Elementary; Sheri Schulze, second grade teacher at Washington Irving Elementary; Amber Boney, fourth grade teacher at Durant Intermediate School; Lhauren Story, fifth grade teacher at Durant Intermediate School; Shawn Franzeo, fifth grade teacher at Durant Intermediate School; Brittney Preston, fifth grade teacher at Durant Intermediate School; and Sherri Anderson, Summer Reading Academy instructor for July 2012.
