As we approach a crucial election, I would like to make a plea for all voters to seek out the truth as much as possible, with the vast wealth of the Republicans flooding the media with propaganda that is usually biased and often false. Witness Romney, a recent statement that federal spending has grown at an unprecedented rate under Obama, which is a lie; the opposite is true – spending by the government has actually decreased each year under his administration. We cannot be too vigilant. This is just the sort of thing that caused us to lose one of our ablest Oklahoma senators only to have him replaced by the likes of Josh Brecheen. Apathy is our worst enemy. If only our registered voters would take the time and effort to become well-informed and then vote accordingly, we could see wonderful changes.

I believe governmental spending is, in many cases, calculated as a percentage of GDP. Historically, federal spending has averaged 21 percent of GDP. Under the Bush Administration, spending averaged 19.6 percent. In Obama’s first four years alone, spending has averaged 24.4 percent of GDP. Looking at the President’s most recent budget, spending does not fall, but increases – the President plans to spend $47 trillion over the next ten years, keeping spending at 23 percent. If that is the case, I think the "biased and false" information being spread by those Republicans might just be the truth.
