Durant was represented well at The Primetime Sports basketball tournament in Plano Texas over last weekend. A group of young men began play on Saturday morning and finished Sunday evening bringing home two distinct championships. The first being a Blue Division Championship consisting of a 5-0 run that was culminated by The Grand Championship game played against the winners of the Red Division. The sixth and final win put the young team at the top of the podium by the end of the evening.
The Thunder is made up of players from several of our area schools. Grant Rustin plays basketball at Victory Life Academy. Noah Hodges heats the hardwood for the Kingston Redskins and the Durant Lions contributed Skye Lowe, Tyler Stovall, Dave Sanders, Taylor Cox, Austin Stallings and Wesley Engle. The team is coached by Will Robinson.
The day began with a 63-23 route over the Hoop Hunters. The next opponent was the Texas Jayhawks. The Thunder took control of the game from the start, finishing with a win, 53-25. After a short break, the boys put up a close win against the SPX Bears, 32-25. With three wins under their belt the team retired for the night holding one of the top records of the day. Sunday morning started off with a blow-out against NTGG, racking up 60 points to their 25.
Thunder was now set up for the Blue Division Championship contest against Tiger’s Elite, the only other undefeated team in their division. First half found the Thunder trailing by a score of 19-27. Starting the second half, the Thunder closed the gap and tied the game forcing an overtime finish. By the end of the overtime play, the Thunder was victorious and took the first place trophy in the Blue Division.
As the complex began to clear, only the top teams were left to decide the Grand Champions of all divisions. The Thunder now lined up against the winners of the Red Division, The Soldiers. The Thunder shooters took a quick lead of 12 points only to see the Soldiers narrow the lead at the half, 25-20. Although the Soldiers were a worthy opponent, the Thunder turned it on in the second half to finally put them away with a final score of 55-44 and taking home the Grand Championship of the weekend.
