TULSA (AP) — Authorities say a Denison, Texas, man drowned in the Red River while trying to help a child.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol also says a Tulsa teenager drowned in Keystone Lake.

In Bryan County, 38-year-old Kenneth Cowart jumped in the river to help a man and two children about 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The man and one child got out, but the other child didn’t.

Cowart reached the child who was still in the water, and was headed back to the shore when they encountered a strong current. He pushed the child across the current to safety but he went under. Denison, Texas, firefighters recovered his body.

Troopers say 17-year-old Thomas Alvarez was on a surfboard at Keystone Lake when he fell off of it about 7:38 p.m. Saturday.

His body was recovered about 8:45 p.m.
