In less than a week, four Bryan County offices will be heading east. On Monday, the Bryan County Board of Commissioners discussed the transfer of personnel and materials to the renovated courthouse annex, just across North Fifth Street from the main building. The annex, of course, is the former Robert L. Williams Library.

The commissioners outlined a specific timetable for the transfer, and notices of office closures are already posted on the courthouse door. On next Monday, the treasurer’s office will be closed for the move and reopen Tuesday morning.Tuesday, July 10 will see the Assessor’s Office transferred; the commissioners will move over on Wednesday, July 11; and the County Clerk’s offices will close next Thursday and Friday (July 12-13) to move across the street.

“That is going to be quite a detailed operation to move all those big books,” said District 1 Commissioner Monty Montgomery. “There will be a few glitches. Whenever you try to move four offices, things are going to happen.”

Other details like special locks and transfer of phone services are still being worked out. The treasurer’s office will only take the last 10 years of record books with them to the annex; the Genealogical Library in Calera has agreed to house nearly a century’s worth of outdated tax records.
