Firefighters respond to basement and grass fires

The past few days have been busy for Durant firefighters who responded to a fire in a basement and also numerous grass fires.

Firefighters were dispatched at 2:50 p.m. Monday to 930 W. Alabama St. and upon arrival five minutes later, they observed a small amount of smoke coming from the basement, and according to a department report, a door and a piece of furniture were on fire. The damage was contained to the basement and the cause of the fire is undetermined.

Firefighters responded to four other fires on Monday. They were dispatched at 1:18 p.m. to 1218 Lenore St. about an outdoor fire and upon arrival, firefighters discovered people were burning copper wire. The fire was out when firefighters arrived.

At 2:19 p.m., firefighters responded to a Dumpster fire in the alley behind Sunday’s Heartland Cafe on West Evergreen St. According to the fire department, a small amount of smoke was coming from the Dumpster when they arrived three minutes later. Firefighters hosed down the Dumpster.

A trash fire is believed to have started a grass fire at 655 Silver Valley Rd. Firefighters arrived on the scene at 5:31 p.m. and put out the fire. According to the report, someone had been burning trash in trash cans that were left attended and the fire spread to the grass. Less than an acre was burned.

Firefighters responded to another grass fire at 9:18 p.m. at 1406 Wendell Drive. That fire was caused by fireworks, according to the fire department. Firefighters put out the fire.

Four fires were snuffed out by firefighters on Sunday. They responded to a grass fire at 10:46 a.m. at 522 Blanchard Rd. and spent approximately 40 minutes putting out the fire. A cause was not disclosed. Firefighters were dispatched to another grass fire at 3:09 p.m. two miles west of Durant on Highway 70. They hosed down the fire and cleared the scene at 3:33. They also responded to a grass fire at 3:23 p.m. at 1300 Briarwood Ave. Another grass/brush fire broke out at approximately 6:20 p.m. at 2312 Mockingbird Ln.

Two more grass fires were put out Friday at Billy Miller Park and 522 Blanchard Rd.
