Hot topics await county commissioners

A couple of agenda items in Monday’s county commissioner meeting are sure to spark some heated discussions.

A discussion about a possible burn ban is likely a moot point after Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin issued a statewide ban on outdoor burning on Friday. The governor’s order would override any action taken by county and local governments, meaning Bryan County has been under a burn ban all weekend.

However, the county could, upon discussion with the Bryan County Fire Chiefs Association, extend the county-wide ban after the state order elapses, if necessary.

Bryan County Commissioners also appear ready to “organize the Board of Directors for the Bryan County Fire Sales Tax,” according to another agenda item. The recently passed sales tax requires the county to form an oversight board, which is likely to mirror the fire chief’s association.

The association will receive a small portion of the tax proceeds, making the entity answerable to taxpayers by way of the county government. The various county fire departments and the Bryan County Communications Center will receive the largest portions of the tax proceeds.

The meeting is set for 9 a.m. Monday in the county commissioners office of the new courthouse annex on Beech Street.
