CALERA – The young Calera Bulldogs earned a split on Friday during their festival, dropping a game to Soper but bouncing back against Bennington.
On Saturday, Boswell, Caney and Calera rounded out the two-day baseball festival.
Friday action saw Soper take an 11-6 win over Calera, then the Red Bears blanked Bennington 7-0. The Bulldogs also defeated Bennington 8-5.
Calera got a pair of runs in the first inning but fell behind 7-2 before a gutsy fourth inning rally. Lucas Wright, Braxton Barton, Alex Carr, Conor Hamilton and Dakota Hodge all got hits in order to fuel the rally.
Clinging to a 7-6 lead, Soper got all four runs back in the fifth for the 11-6 win. Lucas Wright took the loss on the mound.
The Bears dropped their game against Soper but took a quick 4-0 lead over the host Bulldogs in the nightcap. Tad Holt had a two-RBI single in the first and Ryan Lott blasted a two-run homer in the third for Bennington.
But Calera put together a devastating eight-run rally in the fourth to take control.
Barton hit a two-RBI single to get things started, then a Bear miscue brought in Carr. The bases were loaded for Riley Barton, who blew the game open with a 3-run triple. Aaron Markham scored on an infield hit for the 8-4 lead.
Bennington threatened in the fifth, scoring a run and loading the bases before a pop-up ended the game. Trevor McWilliams had a single and a run, Zack Hardesty singled, Isaac Perez scored twice, and Ryan Perry logged a single.
