CALERA - At long last, Calera and Colbert may become twin cities soon.

Calera town council voted Tuesday to hold a special meeting and public hearing in September about annexing a portion of US 75.

This will be the major step toward annexation of a strip of the highway between Platter Road and Platter Cut-Off, the northern limits of Colbert’s city boundaries. If approved, the Calera annexation would represent a small common border between the two towns.

It is critical to note that this proposed annexation by Calera only takes in the highway. Property owners between Platter Road and the cutoff will not be inside the city.

The special meeting and public hearing will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 13. If approved, Highway 69/75 will be completely within a city of some sort from the Texas border to a point nearly 30 miles nroth of the Red River, including jurisdictions of Colbert, Calera and Durant.

In other business Tuesday, the Calera council approved several measures to update the fleet of the town’s police department. Older vehicles will be sold, a newer one bought from Kansas Highway Patrol, and two brand new models will be financed at a price of $61,952.
