TULSA — Nearly 4,300 people answered the casting call for a movie based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “August: Osage County,” by Tracy Letts, a former Durant resident.

The 4,292 people who stood in line at the Tulsa Promenade mall on Saturday were vying for a spot as an extra in the film, which will feature Oscar-winning actresses Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts.

Edmond resident Suzi Watson was the 1,000th person to be evaluated. She told the Tulsa World she put her odds of being picked at about 1,000 to 1.

Katie Standlee told KOTV she’s wanted to be an actress since she was little, but will see where the audition goes.

Extras will be notified as little as 24 to 48 hours before they’re needed.

The film is set to begin shooting in Pawhuska and Bartlesville in September.

Letts is a Durant High School graduate who attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

Freihofer Casting announced Monday another open call for extras for the feature film. The additional open calls will be this Saturday and Sunday, August 25-26 in Bartlesville, OK.

“We had a great turnout in Tulsa last Saturday, but we know many people were unable to attend. We want to open up the opportunity to as many people as possible,” said Oklahoma Casting Director Chris Freihofer, CSA.

Freihofer said the film will need various extras during the first few weeks of filming.

“We do not need babies or toddlers, but we would like to add anyone else to our pool of possibilities,” Freihofer said.

“August: Osage County” tells the story of The Weston family, who come together when their alcoholic patriarch goes missing. The film is based on Letts’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play.

Extras will be paid to appear in the film.

Freihofer said the open call is an opportunity to find, photograph and catalogue all people interested in working in the film in non-speaking roles.

“We will ask everyone to provide us with contact information and clothing sizes, and we will take everyone’s pictures. The whole process should take less than 10 minutes,” he said.

Freihofer added it will save time if everyone knows their clothing sizes in advance.

Casting decisions will be made throughout filming and those selected to appear in the film will be notified sometimes a day or two before they are needed, according to Freihofer. He indicated filming is scheduled to be Mondays through Fridays with no weekend filming. The majority of extras would only be needed for one day, but those days are scheduled to be eight or more hours.

“Do not list a day as available unless you can be on set the entire day, and even into the evening,” he said.

The open call will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12-5 p.m. at Bartlesville High School, 1700 SE Hillcrest Drive. No appointments are necessary.

“Anyone can come during those times and we will get people in and out as quickly as possible,” he said.

Freihofer urged that people should not call the high school for information regarding this event.

“They will not have additional information for anyone, and we should not burden them when they are lending us a favor.” he said. “Instead, this information will be on the casting hotline at 405.310.4391.”

To save time at the open call, Freihofer suggested downloading and filling out the Extras Casting Form found on the website www.FreihoferCasting.com. This tab can be found on the upper right corner of the front page on the website.

“Bring in that form filled out legibly and it will save a lot of time at the open call. We will have essentially a Fast Pass line that will move those people through quicker,” he said.

Those unable to attend the open call in person are invited to submit by mail or email.

“Please include a recent, clear photo and tell us your name, mailing address, email address, all phone numbers, height and all clothing sizes, including shoes. Please list the age of anyone under 18 and please list all days you would be available,” he said.

Email submissions can be sent to AugustExtras@gmail.com. Hard copies can be sent to August Extras c/o Freihofer Casting, 3750 W Main St, Five Park A, Norman, OK 73072.
