BENNINGTON — Dylan Jones had a break-out day at the plate to help Colbert blank the Bears 10-0 in baseball on Tuesday. The Leopards have now won five straight games.
Jones was three-for-four with a two-RBI triple and a pair of base hits. But he had plenty of help, as Caleb Shoemake, Cade Carter, James Hair, Trevor Cole and Bradley Nichols contributed a hit apiece.
Nichols and Kason Krob combined on the mound for the Leopard victory, while Bennington’s Tad Holt took the loss despite five strikeouts.
Trevor McWilliams had a pair of base hits for the Bears, and Zac Hardesty also had a base hit to round out the Bennington offense.
The Bears looked poised early in the game to give the 16-2 Leopards some problems. Bennington’s defense stood firm as Colbert loaded the bases in the first inning but stranded all three. Colbert managed a single run in the second and started to pull away in the third on Cole’s two-run double for a 3-0 lead.
The Leopards put up two more in the fourth on an RBI double for Nichols and Cade Carter’s sacrifice fly to bring in Shoemake. He reached base thanks to a dropped pop-up behind first.
Colbert also received sharp infield defense to keep the Bears off the basepaths. Three Bennington runners were tagged out on pick-off throws and a run-down.
In the fifth, Holt fanned the first two Colbert hitters before a parade of walks and hits knocked him out of the game. Jones’ two-RBI triple broke the game open 8-0 and soon the game ended after five on the run rule.
Bennington (8-9) will participate in this weekend’s tournament in Calera with a game at noon on Friday.
