SILO – The Rebels and Colbert Leopards both squeezed by the competition Thursday in one-run victories to open the Silo Invitational Tournament.
Silo got the four-game slate started with a 6-5 win over Stonewall. Kyle Tate had 10 strikeouts and issued no walks in a complete game, four-hit performance on the mound.
Still, Stonewall managed a three-run first inning and held the Rebels scoreless until the fifth inning. Trailing 5-1 in the sixth, Silo rallied to tie the game and took the win in the seventh when Jarris Hamilton was able to score.
Justin Hendricks was 4-4 at the plate with four base hits and three RBIs. Hamilton’s totals included two singles, an RBI and two runs scored. Tanner Clark had a base hit, RBI and scored a run; Leonard Sandler had an RBI and Lance House scored once.
The Leopards went toe-to-toe with Tupelo in game two of the tourney. The game was scoreless until the fourth and was tied 1-1 when the Tigers scored again in the fifth. Colbert answered in the sixth and got a walk-off RBI single from Dylan Jones in the seventh to push their win streak to six games.
Preston Rice went into the final inning with a tie ballgame but got into two-out trouble as Tupelo put two on base. Kason Krob came in to finish and got the win with a final strikeout.
Defense was key in the win, as Trevor Cole in center, catcher Cade Carter, and shortstop Caleb Shoemake all had good plays to prevent hits or advancing runners. Rice had one of the biggest plays in the sixth, catching a popped-up bunt with a man on first and throwing him out to erase one of four walks issued Thursday.
In the fourth, Bradley Nichols reached on an error and scored on a double from hot-hitting Dakota Graham. This tied the game at 1-1. In the sixth, Colbert tied the game again 2-2 when walks loaded the bases and Rice got the run home on a sac fly. But the Leopards left the inning with the bases loaded.
The difference was in the Colbert seventh. Pinch-hitter Keller Cummins got to base on a slow chopper in front of the plate, and made it to second on a critical throwing error by Tupelo. Jones’s single was the game winner as Cummins came around to score.
Today, Silo will play at 5 p.m. and Colbert will be involved in the 7p.m. game.
And in Silo softball news, the Democrat apologizes for a slight error in Thursday’s paper regarding this week’s softball tournament. The Lady Rebels are indeed at a tournament, but not in Silo. The fast-pitch event is being held in Roff.
