CALERA — The Town Council here had a lot of dealings with Mother Nature at their monthly meeting held Tuesday.

The council discussed items such as the August storm cleanup and mosquito control. Most of the human-oriented problems were left to the police department.

Calera Emergency Management Director Butch Scalf said the town recorded a welcome 2.51 inches of rain since their last meeting, but the town incurred an estimated $120,000 in expenses related to damage from August thunderstorms.

The state is expected to reimburse the town for most of this expense, he said. “It may take awhile, but at least we know we have a good chance of recovering something for all the damage,” he said.

City crews are almost finished cutting down damaged trees and limbs, and they have already hauled off 860 tons of storm-related debris so far. Calera leaders had many people and groups to thank for the recovery effort, especially the City of Durant and Bryan County Commissioners.

The council also approved the purchase of “dunks” to be placed in standing water to kill the larvae of all types of mosquitoes. City officials urged residents who are concerned about mosquito-borne illnesses to be “pro-active” by using available treatments for ponds and standing water, and spraying themselves with insect repellent when outdoors.

The council is also preparing for a 5 p.m. Thursday special meeting to invite the public to have their say about the proposed annexation of a portion of US 69/75 south of the city between the current limits of Calera and Colbert.
