BOKCHITO – The Rattan Rams looked solid on Monday afternoon in a pair of victories over the Calera Bulldogs and the Rock Creek Mustangs. The Rams defeated the Mustangs 11-2 in five innings in the first game and then followed with a 10-2 victory over Calera in six innings in the second game.
The Rams now sport a regular season record of 23-3 with district tournaments beginning this weekend.
Dakota Jackson got the start on the mound for the Mustangs and kept Rattan scoreless in the top of the first. The Mustangs scored a quick run in the bottom half of the first with an RBI triple from David Dill. Zach Cook scored from first base to give Rock Creek a 1-0 lead.
The Rock Creek lead was short-lived as the Rams came back with three runs in the top of the second inning with RBIs from Tanner McAdams, A.J. Davis, and Cade Clay.
The Rams blew the game open in the top of the fourth. Brandon Jones led the inning off with a single and Clay drew a walk to put runners on first and second for Blake Watts. Watts cleared the bases with a three-run homer over the left field wall to make it 7-1.
McAdams also knocked in his second run of the game with an RBI double for the fifth Rattan run of the inning.
The Mustangs scored their second run in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double from Jackson.
An RBI single from Watts in the top of the fifth gave the Rams an 11-2 lead. Clay retired the side in order in the bottom half of the inning for the Rams to wrap up a sharp outing on the mound.
Clay pitched all five innings for the Rams and struck out nine batters. Watts went 2-for-3 at the plate including a home run and four RBIs. McAdams finished with a couple of hits and two RBIs.
The Rams got off to a quick start in the second game with four runs in first inning and four more in the second.
Landon Carper gave Rattan a 4-0 lead with an RBI double to center field that scored two runs. Watts continued to hit the ball well in the second game and had an RBI single in the first inning and another RBI single in the bottom of the second. McAdams gave the Rams an 8-0 lead with a sacrifice-fly RBI.
The Bulldogs scored both of their runs in the top of the second inning with Braxton Barton scoring on a bases loaded walk and Lucas Wright on a fielder’s choice ground ball.
Despite giving up eight runs in the first two frames, the Bulldogs were able to stop the bleeding in the middle innings. Conner Hamilton got the start on the mound for Calera but was replaced by Wright in the bottom of the second. Wright struck out five Rattan batters in relief.
The Rams tacked on two more runs to their lead. Clay scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the fifth to make it 9-2.
Rattan needed only one more run to end the game in the bottom of the sixth and Clay supplied it with a bases-loaded RBI single that scored Davis.
Clay finished 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and three runs scored. Watts went 2-for-3 with two singles and two RBIs. Carper went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
“I thought we played pretty good,” said Calera head coach Ricky Teafatiller after the game. “We did some routine stuff right but we needed to hit with runners in scoring position. Hanging with a team like Rattan for six innings is pretty good.”
This game wrapped up the regular season for the Bulldogs and on Thursday afternoon they will travel to Colbert to compete in the district tournament.
