A Tecumseh man was arrested for suspicion of DUI Wednesday after he almost caused a head-on collision on Highway 70 east Bokchito, according to the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office.

Bennington Police Chief Jimmy Hammond contacted Deputy Billy Sprouse and told him about a vehicle traveling westbound on Highway 70 into Bokchito. Hammond said the vehicle had traveled left of center, causing another driver to drive off the roadway to avoid a head-on collision.

The report stated that Hammond saw the vehicle travel off the roadway, the report stated, and Sprouse told him to stop the vehicle to determine the condition of the driver.

Hammond stopped the vehicle in Bokchito and made contact with the driver, identified as Andrew Jasper Hinkle, 23. Hammond then waited for Sprouse to arrive.

When Sprouse arrived, he found Hinkle asleep and snoring in the driver’s seat, the report stated. Sprouse woke him up, and upon exiting the vehicle, Hinkle was unsteady on his feet.

Sprouse administered a sobriety test and according to the report, Hinkle was very unsteady on his feet and had bloodshot eyes. Sprouse stopped the test because Hinkle could not keeps his balance and was staggering. Sprouse asked Hinkle where he was coming from and according to the report, Hinkle said he was coming from Frogtown and going to Hugo. He said Frogtown was east of Hugo, and Sprouse then told him that he was in Bokchito, 38 miles west of Hugo.

Hinkle was unaware of where he was, the report stated.

He was taken to jail and a breath test was administered and he registered 0.16 blood alcohol concentration, the report stated. Hinkle was booked into jail.
