The Durant Lady Lions enter the 5A fast-pitch playoffs as a dark horse contender, a possible underdog to the host Lady Buffs of McAlester but with more wins than their two regional foes.
Durant (19-14) will play against Pryor (11-20) at 2 p.m. Thursday in McAlester. There is a slight chance of thunderstorms, so Lady Lions fans traveling up US 69 are advised to keep those weather apps handy.
It will be the first of two playoff games on Thursday for the Lady Lions. A win over Pryor will set up a Durant-vs-McAlester game at 4 p.m. The loser of this game comes back at noon to play the loser of the first game in an elimination contest.
The regional championship games, all in McAlester, are set for 2 p.m. Friday and possibly 4 p.m. if a tiebreaker game is needed.
Last week, Durant’s games at the Bixby Festival, against some 6A competition from the Tulsa area, were rained out.
The Lady Lions have not faced Pryor yet this season, and Durant is 0-2 against McAlester. Those were close games, by scores of 4-3 and 4-2, but both games were in August and the teams likely look and play differently now. The Lady Buffs come into the playoffs with a record of 17-11.
Durant has a 4-7 record against district opponents, including their two close losses against McAlester.
